Duchy of Cornwall Oyster Farm has operated on Port Navas Creek off the Helford River since 1974. The farm holds the last commercial oyster lease on the Fal Estuary, which is one of the least polluted large estuaries in the UK and holds Class A water quality status year-round.

The Duchy oysters (Pacific rock, Crassostrea gigas) are known for a distinctively clean, cucumber-tinged brine that comes from the specific tidal conditions of the Fal. The farm supplies Wright Brothers wholesale, which routes them to a wide range of London and southern rooms.

Why they matter to OYSTR

Cornwall has been a producing region for oysters since before Roman times. Most of the historic bed was fished out or lost to disease. The Duchy of Cornwall Oyster Farm holds the last commercial operation and represents the continuation of a tradition that would otherwise be extinct.

For OYSTR, the Duchy is important because it is the anchor Pacific-rock producer for the British market. Any OYSTR box that features Pacific oysters is likely to feature Duchy at some point.

What is coming

A proper visit is scheduled for September. The finished profile will include a walk-through of the racks and tables at low tide, a conversation with the farm manager about the water-quality certification cycle, and photography of the actual creek at the moment the tide changes.
